How to Have Success in the Job Market: Think Process, Not Outcome

Have you ever wanted something so badly that it’s all you can think about? The thought or wish becomes self consuming but is rarely self fulfilling!

It’s the same in the job market – finding yourself out of work can mean you focus wholly on the end game of securing employment rather than all the things you need to do to give yourself the best chance of finding your next position.

However, focusing on the process rather than the outcome is the key to success – not just in the job market but also in many areas of life.

For example, instead of wishing I had a muscular physique (while doing nothing about it), it would be far better if I join a gym and commit to lifting weights in three short but high intensity sessions each week.

The process of doing this over time will deliver the results I want, providing I stick to my training plan.

However, as anyone who has ever held a gym membership knows – having missed a number of sessions it gets increasingly hard to go back. If you do manage to drag yourself there, to make up for all the time you’ve missed, the temptation is to over exert and do a mammoth one off session instead.

How do you think you’ll feel the next day? Probably aching, tired and not wanting to go to the gym again for a very long time.

Also, ahead of an intermittent longer session, how much easier is it for you to talk yourself out of going? It’s far harder to turn up for a mammoth session every once in a while than to commit to three shorter sessions every week – I can speak from personal experience.

All you need to do is run the process and run it consistently. Doing something consistently for a period of time builds a habit and habits are one of the secrets of success in anything!

Similarly, when looking for a job, forget the outcome and run the process. Break up your day into bite size chunks of manageable action and perform these actions consistently. These good habits will keep you busy, maintain your confidence and are highly likely to result in the job you want.
